We’ve all seen strange videos that somehow manage to get to every corner of the internet. We’re left wondering how? Why? And more importantly – can I do this?
Take Gymshark for example. What started as a social media side project has now transformed into a global company that’s reported to be worth over $1 billion.
So, can you do this? The answer is a little more complex than a simple yes or no. We know that this may not be what you want to hear BUT we do know how to help. We’ve answered some of the most asked questions about going viral. It’s time to get clued up!
How do you make engaging content for social media?
This question has a simple answer; you need to make whoever has seen your content feel something. Whether it’s to laugh, cry, question, or fear – your job is to connect with their emotions. If you’re successful in this, not only will you stop the scroll, you’ll increase sharing and engagement.
You also need to be unique. Think of new, fresh, original ideas that will make you stand out and have never been done before. Don’t be afraid to be shocking or controversial. If you’re aware of the risks before doing so, posting something taboo can create a lot of engagement!
Is going viral more to do with timing or content?
When creating your content it’s super important to stay relevant. If you get involved in current events and trends you have a higher chance of getting content viewed as people will already be searching for it.
However, exciting posts can be made by being creative, unique and eye-catching so don’t be bound to current events when making your content.
How do you get your content seen?
Partnering with influencers is an amazing way to increase your audience. Influencers have a large following and engagement already, so partnering with them can get your content shared with people who don’t yet know your brand. Consider your audience and choose who you partner with wisely. You need to consider who has a following that aligns with your target demographic.
To get your content seen, also think about your use of relevant keywords and hashtags. Keep in mind what your target audience will be searching for so you become visible to them.
Does organic or paid social affect the probability of going viral?
You can’t really plan to go viral, so whether your post is paid or organic it all depends on the engagement of your content. There are however benefits for both, so make sure to include some of each in your social media marketing plan.
Organic content builds a relationship with your existing following and makes a clear brand identity for new people who find your page. Whereas, paid social media ads will find a new and wider audience hopefully increasing your engagement. So we’ll say it again – use both!
You’re up!
So going viral, what do we think? Viral content is usually out of the blue. You can’t decide if your content is going to resonate with millions of people and you can’t expect back-to-back viral posts.
But it’s not all doom and gloom, because we have a plan. Your next step should be to focus on creating engaging social media content to build your brand identity and a trusting relationship with your audience. You might find the sweet spot on one of your posts and go viral, or you may not. It’s more important to aim for consistent engagement, not just a one-off hit.
