Introduction

Cronometer is a Canadian nutrition-tracking app for people who want more than a calorie count. Its food database is built on lab-analysed and verified data, so users can track their macronutrients and more than 80 micronutrients, and sync with devices such as Fitbit and Apple Health.

The app is free to download, with a paid subscription for deeper features. Cronometer is independently owned and has a clear stance on privacy: it does not sell its users’ data.

Challenges

Cronometer came to us ahead of January, its busiest time of year, wanting paid acquisition that could support its seasonal growth and build a stronger user base outside the United States, in Canada, the UK, Australia and Europe. As a subscription business, it needed more than installs: it needed people who sign up, log their food and go on to subscribe.

Strategic Approach

To address this, we focused on:

  1. Accuracy-led creative:
We built two campaigns around what sets Cronometer apart: verified data and depth of tracking. The routes included real user testimonials, organic story-style statics, side-by-side comparisons with calorie-only apps, barcode and photo logging demos, and before-and-after UGC.

  2. A creator programme:
We sourced and briefed content creators and ran their videos as partnership ads on Meta and Spark Ads on TikTok. Creator ads became the account’s strongest performers, so we kept adding new creators to the rotation.

  3. Structure by platform and market:
We split campaigns by iOS and Android and grouped markets into tiers by their sign-up to purchase conversion rates. We then moved budget using retention data from Adjust, pausing segments that brought in users who did not stay.

  4. Optimising for the right event:
We tested registration-optimised campaigns on Meta and purchase-optimised campaigns with cost goals on TikTok, and shifted budget between the two channels on cost per purchase rather than cost per install.

Across our first nine months on the account, paid social moved from launch to a steady, creator-led programme. Meta figures compare January 2026, our first full month, with later periods.

  • Stronger engagement: Meta click-through rate rose from 1.15% in January 2026 to 2.60% across July to September, an uplift of 126%, while cost per click fell 44%.
  • Cheaper installs: Meta cost per install fell 45% between January and August 2026, as we moved budget towards TikTok and concentrated Meta on the strongest creator ads.
  • More from the same budget: Through most of April, Meta delivered 29% more installs and 12% more registrations than the previous period on flat spend, with cost per install down 23%.
  • Purchase-focused TikTok: Our purchase-optimised TikTok campaign drove purchases at around a fifth of the account-wide cost per purchase in July, and in August overall TikTok cost per purchase fell a further 16%.
  • New markets: In October we extended Meta and TikTok into France and Germany with English-language creative, alongside the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia.

Conclusion

Cronometer now has a paid social programme built on creator content, measured beyond the install on registrations and purchases, and ready to grow into new markets. We continue to refresh the creative and test where the next efficient growth sits.

This project drew on our paid social, video and motion design, influencer marketing and app marketing services. See more of our work.
