Statement of intent

Favoured is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for its employees, for contractors engaged on its behalf, and for anyone affected by its work. We will comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and with the regulations made under it, and we will provide the information, instruction, training and supervision needed to achieve that.

Favoured employs more than five people and is therefore required by section 2(3) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 to prepare, and to revise as often as may be appropriate, a written statement of its general policy with respect to the health and safety at work of its employees. This document is that statement, and it is brought to the attention of all employees. Our work also puts our people on premises controlled by other organisations during location filming, which is a further reason for the policy to be explicit rather than assumed.

Scope and the nature of our risk

Favoured is a fully remote professional services business of 21 employees. We operate no offices, no premises, no warehousing, no plant and no vehicles. Our work is marketing strategy, paid media, creative and video production, web and analytics work, and the administration of the business.

The material risks are therefore in two places, and they are treated differently.

Display screen equipment and homeworking. Almost all of our work is screen-based and carried out in employees’ own homes.

Location filming and production. A minority of our work involves filming on premises controlled by a client or a third party, sometimes abroad, with lighting equipment, cabling and non-professional contributors. This is where our people are exposed to physical risk and where our obligations are most active.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with Andrew Willers, Co-founder and Commercial Director.

Day to day responsibility rests with Danielle Huddlestan, Head of Operations, who is responsible for workstation assessments, for the accident record, and for confirming that a risk assessment exists before a shoot proceeds.

On a filming assignment the named producer for that job is responsible on the day for the safety of the crew and of contributors, for complying with the site’s own rules, and for stopping work where it is not safe to continue. Any member of the crew may stop work on that basis without needing permission.

Every employee is responsible for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others affected by their work, for using equipment as instructed, and for reporting hazards, accidents and near misses.

Arrangements

Display screen equipment. Every employee completes a workstation self-assessment on joining and at least annually thereafter, covering chair, desk, screen height, lighting and breaks. Where the assessment identifies a need, Favoured provides the equipment required. Employees are advised to take regular breaks from screen work, and eyesight tests are available on request.

Homeworking. Employees are responsible for the general condition of their own home working area. We provide guidance on setting it up safely and ask that any hazard which affects a person’s ability to work safely is reported.

Location filming. No shoot proceeds without a written risk assessment covering the location, the equipment, electrical safety and cabling, working at height if any, manual handling, contributors and members of the public, travel, and the emergency arrangements for that site. The assessment is made against the site’s own requirements, and where a site imposes its own conditions, including any conservation or collections requirement, those conditions govern. The crew is briefed on it before work starts. Lighting and electrical equipment is inspected before use and is operated by the production crew rather than by contributors or site staff.

Contractors and freelancers. Anyone engaged by Favoured to work on a production is briefed on the risk assessment for that job and is expected to work to it. We ask freelance crew to hold their own public liability cover appropriate to their trade.

First aid and accidents. On a filming assignment, first aid arrangements are identified as part of the site risk assessment, including the location of the site’s own provision. Accidents, injuries and near misses are reported to the Head of Operations and recorded. Anything reportable under RIDDOR is reported to the Health and Safety Executive within the required period.

Travel. Where a job requires travel, itineraries are held centrally and a named contact knows where the crew is.

Insurance. Favoured holds Employer’s (Compulsory) Liability insurance and Public Liability insurance, and the current certificates are available on request.

Mental health and working hours. We monitor workload and hours, particularly around production peaks, and a person may raise a concern about workload with any director or with the Head of Operations.

Consultation, monitoring and review

Health and safety matters may be raised at any time with the Head of Operations or with a director.

This statement is reviewed annually, and sooner following any reportable incident, any material change to the nature of our work, or any change in the law.
